Photo

The latest photo montage is of Mozambican men of various ages. The man in the middle is an elderly man in Dinthi. The boys are friends of my sons, also from Dinthi.

The photo on this blog shows four Mozambican women at various life stages. From left to right they are: A Makonde woman from Mueda, a Nyungwe woman from Dinthi, two young girls from Vila Ulongwe.

Zirinda in the center photo is Hilary’s friend from Dinthi. The young girls are some of Eleanor’s playmates.

Boy in front yard. (Dinthi, 2007)

Does this little boy remember me the way that I remember him? What is his life like in that African village. Does he need my help? Or do I need his? What could we learn from each other?

Canoe on the Zambezi near Tete. (2001)

Whoa, that last header was too peaceful and sleepy. And the day isn’t ending. It’s just beginning. But if we’re going to make it where we’re headed we need to get in the boat and start paddling.

The photo in the header is a scene from a recent stop we made at a rural airstrip in Mozambique somewhere between Beira and Nampula. I like the way the people are posed along the airstrip with the wreckage of an old Soviet-era plane in the background. This photo tells many stories. For me, the plane wreckage represents political efforts of outsiders to shape Africa. The well-worn footpath represents centuries of African customs that won’t be changed overnight. And the photographer (me!) represents many people who come to Africa touching down for a brief time and then leaving again without really connecting with the continent and its people. Our family has lived in Africa for almost eight years and we’re still just beginning to feel at home here.

This was the original blog header image. A view of the Dinthi valley where our house is. South of the Cahora Bossa reservoir in Mozambique.
