Hippo

Latest news: The Lingamish Hippo is now the focus of the new Lingapotamus Art Gallery: http://lingapotamus.wordpress.com. Visit there for all of her various appearances on this blog as well as examples of Fan art. You can even make your own.

The Lingamish Hippo shows up in various colors around this blog from time to time. She is a sensitive soul so I hope you won’t say anything unkind about her girth.

I like the Hippo. Brings back memories of the Hippo House, and the colors remind me of the Hot Dog House. A recent program on TV showed baby Hippos frolicing on the shore of a river, and then we saw a mother hippo trying to protect her baby from a crocidile. Eventually the croc got the baby. It was sad, but such is life in the African rivers.

What is the significance of the Hippo to you?

The hippo has always been our favorite family icon (someone once called it our idol!). This particular carving from Zimbabwe reminds me of the creativity and humor of Zimbabweans who are currently suffering so much at the hands of their leaders.

Oh wow, the current green and blue color combination is doing weird things to the nerve endings in my brain which interpret and respond to visual cues! I was trying to find a word to describe the sensation, but the words that came to mind weren’t what I was feeling, once I looked them up, or else they weren’t even real words (the Bantu-influenced part of my brain keeps thinking I should be able to construct new words by joining ones already in existence)

Trippy, ain’t it? Hilary had a similar reaction.

Trippy. That’s a good word for it.

And I thought that other hippo was trippy! My brain was feeling kind of fuzzy today, but the double take I did trying to bring the hippo into focus made me think I was even fuzzier than I’d already thought.
