How to get drawings on to your blog
2008 July 24
These days I’m interested in getting a little more of an artsy hand-drawn look on my blog. If you scroll down you can see a couple of pictures. I’ve also photographed hand-lettered posts. Trouble is, I don’t know how to make them look nice.
Maybe some of you have some advice on how to photograph drawings and paintings.
Here’s what I do at this point:
- Draw a picture
- Photograph it with flash using macro from about 3 feet away.
- Crop the photo.
- Increase sharpness and contrast.
Results? Not so good.
Any suggestions on how to get a better image?
Here’s a self-portrait:
This is 100% contrast.

Have you tried a scanner? Surely that would work better in a case like this. Or you could ask Dave Walker what he does, but he is a bit distracted just at the moment, and just might see you as a rival. After all, your drawing style is a bit like his even if your hairstyles are similar only in their untidiness!
If my drawing are too close to his he might serve a C&D on me. I will ask him after the hub bub dies down.
I will make a drawing with a pen or pencil, then scan the picture with a flatbed scanner. Once I do that, I will use a program like Photoshop or Picasa to make some minor changes to the new digital format. Of course you could always try creating a simple picture directly on your computer using a program like MS paint or you could further manipulate a picture that you have all ready scanned through MS paint.
I feel like a Neanderthal when I do the above, but I have been able to make decent pieces that way.
Hope that helps.

Thanks, Adam.

I’d like options using a camera rather than a scanner…
Thanks for the plug David. By the way those hippo photos in the last post are amazing.
