The "I hate memes" meme

2008 March 7
by David Ker

I told myself that I needed to let the technorati ranks go and just how shall I say this…get a life. Yeah, that’s pretty much it.  But still I keep checking them because it’s an easy way to keep an eye on the wackos who keep linking to my blog.

In fact, I had thought that in 2008, much like the elves at the end of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, my blog would be sailing off into the horizon of obscurity while young guns and stars ascendant would crowd the spotlight.

Instead, I eclipsed the century mark today. Back in September I drooled over the elusive triple century: 100 visitors a day, 100 technorati rank and 100 subscribers. But what honor remains for those of us among the top 0.00001 percent of bloggers on the planet? In 2008, blogging fizzled into triviality. It’s all memes and quizzes. Let me warn you: if an Internet quiz tells you that you are a colon, it is not a compliment. If you find that you are struggling to define your gender or that you make spaghetti like Karl Barth, well, it’s time to shut off the ol’ computer and go outside and breathe some fresh air. It’s time to stop looking for a pat on the back and clean the garage. It’s time, my friends, to see the big L hanging over your head which is not for love or laughter or life but LOSER. People, what is the matter with us? Can we just stop memeing and quizzing and smacking each other with cream pies on Facebook and just find a real live human being in your vicinity who is probably also plugged into the matrix in a nearby room and give them a hug or tell them a joke or…something!

And when you’re done, don’t forget to link to this post. With your help I can reach 200.

Now go out there and tag five other bloggers with the “I hate memes” meme.

You mean IM’ing my wife who is sitting next to me working on the other computer is not good communication?

You should have seen us last night, three men sitting in a restaurant in Mozambique sending SMSs to our wives. ;-)

Actually I posted my quiz results, with a post-dated time, as a quick way to keep my blog active while I DID go away and get a real life for a couple of days. But I am not at all embarrassed at being likened to a colon.
