Sing The Greek Alphabet Song

2007 September 1
by David Ker

About five years ago when I was taking the infamous Greek seminary course, Hilary did a brilliant arrangement of the Greek alphabet to the tune of “Sarasponda.” Ever since then that song has been a part of our family repertoire. Recently I’ve been working on a hip hop version of that song but I thought that before I tortured you with my weirdness you should be able to hear the real McCoy.  There are two versions. And you can either use the player or download the mp3.

ABGD (The Mega Mix) – Ker Kidz (mp3)

Photo: Henry, Ellie, Andrew and Benjamin say “Mmmmmuuuu!”

This is the standard melody as sung by my four kids. I’m giving you the unedited version because it sounds rough but cool, especially with the little outro by Benjamin at the end.

The second version is Benjamin going absolutely nuts on a gospel version of his own creation. This kid is only seven and finding showmanship like this under the same roof with me is a little scary.

ABGD (The Next Mix) – Benjamin Ker (mp3)

Photo: Ben does his version of ABGD while Ellie looks on in amazement.

My kids are sure that they’re going to be famous now so if you would put in a comment telling them how you like their artistry that would be great.

The player clipped the recordings for me. Did they work for everyone else? The recordings should be 27 seconds and 32 seconds respectively.

This is probably because I’m trying them out with a dialup connection from Africa.

Wow! You guys are amazing! What talent! Six people in one family who can either write or perform music (or both)! Ben, with your special version you had me laughing as hard as your Dad makes me laugh.

I couldn’t afford the CD of the Greek alphabet song to complement the used curriculum of “Hey, Andrew, Teach Me Some Greek” I got for my kids. But, this is even better–I get the, “Hey, Andrew, Ellie, Ben and Henry, Teach Me Some Greek” version.

My daughter keeps asking me for the video of Ellie’s performance as the chicken in “The Swedish Chef” many years ago.

Your family has such a nice blend of talent, humor and matter of factness that if you’re not already famous, it’s only a matter of time, in my opinion :)

Would you consider recording your family singing the song/Psalm you wrote to the tune of “Flow Gently Sweet Afton”? I’ve downloaded the music, but being not-musically-intuitive, I can’t easily make happen getting the music and words together.

I hated that skit. Having a crazed Swede chasing my daughter with a kitchen knife! Good luck in tracking down the video!

We’ll work on the other recording soon.

They came through fine for me. You better watch that young fellow. He could be dangerous! :-)

I like seeing what other songs/tunes folks use to retain the Greek alphabet. Our teacher 6 years ago made up a very catchy tune which we caught on to quickly, used non-stop when we needed to remember the letter order, and have been using with our kids. Our oldest son, now four, was singing it at 3. It can seem silly at first, but you cannot argue with the results.

Eddie, it is comforting to know that I am not the only Dad out there twisting little minds this way! I’d love to hear your teacher’s version.

We’ll record it…probably post it on my blog and give you the link.

THANK YOU!! Haha. I was searching the web for an alphabet song for the Greek alphabet (I’m also a seminary student, haha) when I found this page. I learned to sing the first version above really quickly!! Thanks for posting it, and thereby helping me with my studies!! haha ;-)

I Start Elementary Greek 1 a week from now. I am so frustrated! For our first class the Professor insists we memorize and learn to write the Greek Alphabet. This is the first time i’ve heard it outloud and unfortunately, the recording cut off 17 seconds into it. Could you say a prayer or two or three for me, Please?
