I’ve recently started recommending the CEV Learning Bible in the sidebar of my blog. You can even buy it and make me hugely rich at the same time (That was a joke).
But if I had money to spend on a Bible, I wouldn’t spend $49 on a single copy of the CEV Learning Bible. Instead I’d drop $47.76 on a case of 24 of these $1.99 Bibles at American Bible Society. Wouldn’t it be great to have 24 Bibles for less than fifty bucks?!?
Then I’d start giving them away:
- 1 for my Pastor
- 1 for my Sunday School teacher
- 1 for my boss
- 1 for each of my friends
- Kids, grandkids, neighbors…
- Who else?
Go ahead and call me biased but I think this is the best Bible in English for daily reading whether you are a child or an adult. This is the version our family uses for devotions. And our kids use it in homeschool for their memorization work. There’s no difficult jargon and it’s a very accurate translation.
On Amazon one CEV Learning Bible is $49. You could buy a whole case of Outreach editions at American Bible Society for $47.76. Hmmm, let me see…I have a bookshelf full of Bibles, but that CEV Learning Bible looks really cool. Or I could buy 24 Bibles and give them away…
Do the math. And let me know if you buy a case and what you do with them. I’d love to hear your story.

You’re right, you certainly can’t beat that price! I personally love the original blue hardback, because, well it’s hard back and the font size makes it even easier to read. My parents loved the large print readability at such a low price (about $10.00). Through the years they have given several copies as gifts–to foster children who discovered and fell in love with the Bible when they were living with my parents, e.g.
I also found that they were great for people who are learning English. (On ABS’ website there is an edition called the Global Version, where apparently some of the American wording has been changed to be less culturally specific. I haven’t read this one, though.)
I really appreciate that ABS makes Bibles available at such low prices compared to other publishers. Incidentally, the blue hardback CEV my daughter uses has proven to be more durable than the more flashy looking Zondervan hard back editions for kids, which my son used.

Good idea, I like most contemporary versions. I could easily give out a case to family and friends. Is there a Spanish Contemporary version that we could give to out Spanish speaking friends? Joni just left for Mexico today and they took a case of Bibles with them.

Yesterday, at church they announced they are collecting Bibles to send to Africa, (English speaking countries) to distribute to those who do not have the scriptures. Will any version do, or is it a waste to send KJV or other antiquated versions? We probably have a dozen Bibles on the shelf that are no longer being used.

eclexia, we have two of those big blue ones and for Christmas everyone in the family got a mini version. My tired eyes prefer the big one.
Dad, you’ve got a copy of the big blue, too. That’s a good translation for three generations in our family and eclexia’s too. Neat!
I know ABS has some Spanish Outreach editions but I’m not sure what version it is.
Collecting Bibles to send to Africa? That sounds strange but on the other hand in America we tend to always have a surplus so sending it overseas is one way to put that to good use. Why don’t you suggest they order cases of CEV’s from South Africa. They are printed right there in British-English editions and shipping would be a lot cheaper.

R54 per bible and that is hard copy. 20 in a case.
If we present a letterhead to the Bible Society it would be cheaper but I was not told by how much.

Thanks, Roy.
Note: That’s South African Rand and about US$7.
